From Vox magazine, July 1997. "Rock the World"

"London is too dirty and too big. The dirt is a matter of fact: you only have to walk around for half an hour, and your snot and your fingernails go completely black. It's too big because most other cities- if you go anywhere from Amsterdam to Paris to Munich or Millan -you can generally walk around and cover most places in an hour. London is much too spread out for the traveller.

"Plus points are that (adopts grandad tones) It's very lively for the youngsters if they like to go out and dance; we've got lots of that. But London close far too early. It's one of the three most important cities in Europe, and the tube grinds to a halt at midnight, which is really quite pathetic.

"A good place to go, when it's sunny, is Brockwell Park Lido. Lovely 1920s construction, very big, very clean, a nice relaxed atmosphere, very un-laddy. Also, for the same sort of day-simply because most Londoners never bother to go on it-the boat from Westminster Pier to Greenwich is wonderful, simply because of the guy who does the commentary. He's one of the great amateur London comedians, and he makes terrible quips for 45 minutes about the architecture. So you get this bad taste comedy thrown in at no extra cost. They serve quite a good pint as well."
